Wild Marsh Sporting Clays |
The league banquet was today. Team Give'r had a successful season, capturing the second place trophy in the AA class. Scott averaged 45.5 birds per round to place an impressive 5th out of 345 shooters! Chad just missed the top 10 with a 44.2 avg., and Kent had a very respectable 42.7 to round out the top 3. This season really turned into a team sport with eveyone contributing at one point or another. There were only 2 rounds out of 10 where Team Give'r was not represented in the top 10 shooters for the round. |

For the first time I can remember, I had no idea where Team Give'r would be hunting this morning. After running the normal scouting routine, we came up with no duck or goose feed to speak of. We (Matt, Kent, Scott, Darren, and Chad) decided to head back to the same field as the previous day to see what we could scrape together. Little did we know that in a couple of hours, there were would be another 39 honkers laying on the ground! It turned into another fantastic day of waterfowling, despite the continued heat and no wind from the previous day. |

Saskatchewan Canada Trip 1 Day 2 |
Another GREAT day. 39 honkers and 1 duck. Again we got set up late and we had trouble finding the birds while scouting so we set up 400 yards to the west of where we hunted the previous day. There wasn't 1 bird in the field while scouting. Ran traffic all day and got a limit!!
Field: Wheat
Decoy Spread: Standard U, 8 doz Big Foot Decoys, 3 doz Deadly Decoys, 18 Green Head Gear Field Mallards, 12 field shell mallards |

Crushed the birds today!! 39 honkers and 35 ducks. Vern, Kent, Matt, Scott, and Chad made it out for the non-resident Saskatchewan waterfowl opener. What was planned to be a good duck shoot, quickly turned into a great goose shoot, as well. It was a great time! Unfortunately, the weather was very warm (75 degrees) and there was virtually no wind - Not exactly great waterfowling weather. |

Scott, Kent and I hit the dead sea for an evening outing. Kent caught and kept a nice tagged walleye, good eating size. I caught and released one 24.5 inch walleye. Nice evening, but fairly slow. Couldn't get any food at Chico's on the way home. |

The Shack |
I met my Dad out at the shack. The weather forcast is for cool temps through the rest of the ice house season so I took it down off the 4x4 blocks. I also pushed it a foot or so with my bumper so I could drill new holes. We had a good evening and Dad kept a limit of the larger little crappies. We released about 30 - 35 more. The battery finally went dead and we had to use the lanturn toward the end of the evening. I brought it home and am charging it for tomorrow's tip-up-tuesday adventure. |

The Shack |
Scott and I went back out to the shack tonight to jack it up and put it on blocks. Turned out we probably could have skipped it. All the water had drained through the ice and what was left had mostly froze. The shack must have been on a high spot because it was sitting on top of the ice. Just to be sure we jacked it up and put it on some 4x4 blocks anyway. It was very easy to do with the car style floor jack; just had to chisel a spot to fit it under the end of the house. Since it only took about 15 minutes we celebrated with a beer inside the before we left! |

Lake Independence |
Tip-up-Tuesday Monday night ice fishing outing. Attended by Chad and I at the shack, we experienced some very strange weather conditions. Temps in the high 40's, rain, thunder and high winds. All the snow on the lake had melted and we were driving through 3 to 4 inches of water on top of the ice. Definitely glad to be fishing inside! This was Chad's first time at the shack and it seemed to meet his approval (he forked over his portion of the purchase price). Kent was out with an injury (gout??) and Scott got delayed at work. With Kent responsible for dinner we quit a little early and headed to Detour 19 in Loretto for dinner and meeting. Scott met us there and we had a typical highbrow discussion about how great that Hudson River pilot Sully is, and the pros and cons of the show Ice Road Truckers. I'm a little concerned about the house freezing in once it gets cold; I guess we'll have to keep an eye on it. Maybe jack it up and put it on some extra 2x4's? Until next week... |

Tip-Up-Tuesday's first week in the new permanent shack. It was a great success. Scott, Kent and I made it out to experience catching small crappies in style! We got the house banked - what an improvement, no more drafts and holes skimming over. I grilled burgers on the Coleman stove and along with chips we had a feast. The lights and fan worked great and the battery seemed to last just fine. We had the big buddy heater on low and were very warm.
Some quotes from the evening...
"Anything smaller than this house would have been a waste of money"
"This is like fishing in your living room"
"Where the hell has Charlie been all winter?"
No more discussion on a name for the shack. Maybe next week if co-owner Chad bothers to show. Oh yeah, we caught lots of fish again, all released, due to their size, not our benevolence.

The Gull Lake - Lake Independence connection |
Following last Monday's trap link experience, Team Give'r decided it would be way more fun to fish together all the time. A permanent fishhouse was located via Craigslist and today Kent, Scott and I drove up to Gull Lake to check it out. We ended up buying it and bringing it back to Lake Independence. What a palace!! An 8x10 piece of heaven on ice. Those miniture crappies are really screwed now!!!! |

Weekly tip-up-Tuesday outing. Who says Scott can't fish? Lacking his Vex he bravely set out on his own and picked an awesome crappie spot (numbers wise anyway). Kent and Matt joined up and we caught fish as fast as we could reel them up for several hours. No big ones, but tons of fun. The trap link was a pain in the ass, but functional. Definitely more fun when we're all together. |

Kick-off for our weekly Tip-Up-Tuesday Monday night ice fishing league! Attended by Kent, Scott, Chad and Matt. Despite bitter cold and high winds we made it out and got a few crappies. Chad and Matt enjoyed some cigars and outfished the other guys (of course)! All fish were released. Post fishing meeting and dinner at BBG where the merrits of a permanent fishhouse were discused. We also tested battery operated LED lights in the houses with mixed results. |
